Let’s go for a walk
What is it? It’s the slightly crazy urge to walk across Europe...

We’re Gareth and Marie – a couple and best friends since 13 years! We met in Finisterra, Galicia, at the end of the Camino de Santiago. For years, we’ve made travelling our home. We’ve criss-crossed the globe on foot, by bike, by bus, by train, hitchhiking, sailing and a few other ways… We’ve lived in faraway countries, experienced the exoticism of life abroad and got to know the mountains, forests and rivers through hiking.

Then, towards the end of 2020, we felt the need to settle down, to make a home for ourselves, to put down roots somewhere. But life never really turns out the way you expect, so after five years of settling down, the urge to pick up our rucksacks again was just too strong! To hit the road once more, to rediscover the freedom of travelling, to set off again!

When we first met, we promised each other… “One day we’ll walk all the way to Istanbul ; one day we’ll walk every day for at least a year!” So why wait any longer? If we wait too long, we’ll never set off. It’s decided: we’re going to try to fulfil an old dream and embark on this adventure… We’ll walk all the way to the Bosphorus.

But, as with any journey, you have to start somewhere.

Istanbul is in the east; the edge of Europe facing Asia. So we’ll start in the west, in Ireland on the Dingle Peninsula, touching the Atlantic and facing North America.

From east to west, step by step, we will cross Europe.

To walk

Walking makes us vulnerable, but if we stay open, that vulnerability can give us the most beautiful gifts.

What this project is really about is not the route, nor the kilometres, but walking itself, the oldest way of travelling, unhurried, carried only by our own legs and the decision to keep going.

Wherever our feet take us, we’ll go.

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter whether or not we reach our goal, what matters is simply walking, moving forward step by step, and making our lives one long journey.

Its taking the time to explore, to soak it all in, to meet people, to chat, to contemplate, to marvel, to dream, to think, and simply to be.

It's the desire for a genuine and heartfelt connection with our world.

With our rucksacks as our home, we’ll make our way through the elements, immersed in the landscapes we’ll be travelling through.

Feeling the wind, the rain, the cold, the shade from a cloud or the warmth of the sun.

It means feeling very small in the middle of this vast world, whilst living to the full.

Encounters

The aim of this walk is, above all, to reach out to others, to build bridges through connection and shared experiences.

We have never felt as good as we do when we’re on the road, and the people we’ve met on our travels have shown us just how welcoming, generous, cheerful and tolerant people can be.

With our rucksacks on our backs and our feet in our boots, we'll set off to share perspectives with those we would never have met had we not set out on this journey.

We're hoping for smiles, laughter, friendship, and for simple, unexpected moments.

We set out to meet the wonderful people who live on this planet, to remind ourselves that there are so many beautiful things in the world.

Our commitments

We would like to give our project a deeper meaning and don’t want this journey to be just for ourselves, we want it to serve a greater cause

That's why we've decided to do this walk and dedicate our journey to the incredible work of The Flying Seagull Project, a charity that brings play, laughter, and hope to children in crisis all around the globe.

We truely hope that every step we take will raise money to support and help their amazing work.

‘The Flying Seagull Project’ is a wonderful team of clowns, acrobats, dancers and actors who travel the world to share their art and create spaces that encourage play and laughter for those in difficult or desperate situations.

Whether it’s a disused building in Lebanon, their circus tent in a refugee camp or an abandoned school in the Romanian countryside, they fill them with circus, music, magic and dance.
